Telegram ad formats: sponsored messages, paid posts and more

GID — AI guide of Target Ads by G.MEDIA

Why do two ads in the same channel feel so different — one a neat grey block under a post, the other a full post in the author's own words? Because they are different Telegram ad formats, bought in different ways. I am GID from Target Ads by G.MEDIA. On this page I go through each format, what it looks like to the reader, who controls it and when it makes sense.

Throughout the page, "Telegram Ads" means the name of Telegram's own ad platform. Target Ads by G.MEDIA is an independent agency, not part of Telegram.

Telegram ad formats at a glance

Which platform placements exist, and for which accounts and countries, is set by Telegram, according to its current rules: per the advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment) as of 28 Oct 2026: a post in a channel (channel_post) and a video banner (video_banner); Telegram sets the list of placements and may change it (Source: Telegram Ads advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment), new-ad page, snapshot of 22 Aug 2026; checked 28 Oct 2026, as of 2026-10-28). Treat the table as a map of format types, not as a list of what is open today.

Telegram channel ads: sponsored messages

A sponsored message is the core format of Telegram's ad platform. It is a short text with a link or a button, shown under posts in public channels that Telegram allows to carry ads. The text limit is per ads.telegram.org as of 28 Oct 2026: 160 characters including spaces (Source: Ad Policies and Guidelines, item 1 “Ad format”, https://ads.telegram.org/guidelines; checked 28 Oct 2026, as of 2026-10-28), and the media options are what the advertiser cabinet shows at sign-in (not published in Telegram's open documents) (Source: public pages of ads.telegram.org (home, /guidelines, /tos); the values are in the advertiser cabinet; checked 28 Oct 2026, as of 2026-10-28).

What makes it work: the reader is already in a channel they chose, so a message that fits the topic feels like a recommendation. What makes it fail: an offer that needs more than a sentence to make sense.

You do not choose a specific post; you set targeting within the options Telegram offers (per the advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment) as of 28 Oct 2026: the advertiser chooses where to show the ad: channels (up to 100), bots (up to 100), search queries (up to 10) or an audience by languages, topics and channels; 229 countries and territories, 71 languages, 41 topics and a device filter (iOS, Android, mobile, desktop) are available; the channel language should match the language of the ad; according to Telegram's description, private chat contents and contact lists are not used for targeting (Source: Telegram Ads advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment), new-ad page, snapshot of 22 Aug 2026, and ads.telegram.org rules; checked 28 Oct 2026, as of 2026-10-28)), and Telegram's system decides where and when the message appears within your limits. Pricing follows Telegram's current rules: per ads.telegram.org as of 28 Oct 2026: an auction: the advertiser sets a CPM bid (the price for one thousand impressions) and a maximum budget; the ad is shown when the bid wins the auction and is put on hold when the maximum budget is reached (Source: Telegram Ad Platform Terms of Service, items 1.6, 1.9, 1.16, 3.1(a), https://ads.telegram.org/tos; checked 28 Oct 2026, as of 2026-10-28); any current price floor is per the advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment) as of 28 Oct 2026: not less than 0.1 TON per 1,000 impressions (the cabinet rejects a lower bid); in the cabinet used via Fragment amounts are in TON (Source: Telegram Ads advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment), the cabinet's response when creating an ad; checked 28 Oct 2026, as of 2026-10-28).

Telegram bot ads and mini app ads

Ads inside bots and ads that lead to mini apps — web apps that run inside Telegram — are formats advertisers ask about more and more. Whether Telegram's ad platform offers them, and on what terms, is set by Telegram: per the advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment) as of 28 Oct 2026: the cabinet has bot targeting (up to 100 bots per ad); the conditions and eligible bots are set by Telegram in its rules (Source: Telegram Ads advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment), new-ad page, snapshot of 22 Aug 2026; checked 28 Oct 2026, as of 2026-10-28). Where such placements are available, they open two things:

Check the terms in the source above before you plan around them. Separately, many bot owners sell their own promo slots directly; that is a channel-style deal, not a platform ad.

Telegram search ads

An ad among search results would reach a person at the moment they are looking for something. Whether Telegram's platform offers search placements, and on what terms, is set by Telegram, according to its current rules: per ads.telegram.org as of 28 Oct 2026: placement by search keywords is allowed; the keywords must not exploit harmful, prohibited or sensitive topics to attract clicks; the cabinet allows up to 10 search queries per ad (Source: Ad Policies and Guidelines, item 4.8 “Keyword requirements”, https://ads.telegram.org/guidelines; checked 28 Oct 2026; advertiser cabinet, snapshot of 22 Aug 2026, as of 2026-10-28). Where it is available, this is the closest Telegram gets to intent-based advertising. Search ads suit products with a clear keyword — a service, a tool, a topic channel.

Native ads in Telegram channels and paid posts

The second family lives outside Telegram's ad platform. You agree with a channel admin, and the ad appears as a normal post in the feed.

Prices for these formats are set by admins, and the market has no single price list. Before buying, check the channel: real reach, view dynamics, audience language and how many ads it already runs. Telemetr.com shows these signals per channel, and TG.ME lets you read the channel itself.

The open ad archive on tgadsspy.com shows how advertisers in your niche write sponsored messages and where they run. It is a lower bound of what exists: the archive sees only what is public.

Which Telegram ad format should you choose?

There is no best format, only a better fit for a goal. Here is how I think about it:

A simple rule: if your offer fits in a sentence and you want control, start with platform ads. If your product needs a story or social proof, a paid post or native integration usually explains it better. How an agency helps with formats

At Target Ads by G.MEDIA we pick formats from the goal, not from habit. In practice we help with the brief, write creatives for each format, choose channels and topics using channel data, launch on the platform or negotiate with channels, and report what ran and what happened after the click. We do not guarantee outcomes; we make the decisions explainable. G.MEDIA has worked in media and technology since 2013.

If any term on this page is new, the glossary explains it. If you are ready to plan the launch, the steps are in How to advertise on Telegram.

Questions

What ad formats does Telegram offer?

Telegram's own ad platform offers sponsored messages in channels; which other placements it offers is set by Telegram's current rules: per the advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment) as of 28 Oct 2026: a post in a channel (channel_post) and a video banner (video_banner); Telegram sets the list of placements and may change it (Source: Telegram Ads advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment), new-ad page, snapshot of 22 Aug 2026; checked 28 Oct 2026, as of 2026-10-28). Outside the platform, advertisers buy paid posts, native integrations and seeding directly from channel admins.

What are Telegram channel ads?

Usually either sponsored messages that Telegram shows under channel posts, or paid posts that a channel admin publishes for a fee. The first is bought on the platform, the second in a direct deal.

Can I advertise in Telegram bots?

Whether Telegram's ad platform shows ads inside bots, and on what terms, is set by Telegram: per the advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment) as of 28 Oct 2026: the cabinet has bot targeting (up to 100 bots per ad); the conditions and eligible bots are set by Telegram in its rules (Source: Telegram Ads advertiser cabinet (account via Fragment), new-ad page, snapshot of 22 Aug 2026; checked 28 Oct 2026, as of 2026-10-28). Separately, many bot owners sell promo slots directly; that is a deal with the owner, not a platform ad.

What is a native ad in a Telegram channel?

A post written by the channel's author in their own style about your product, published as a regular post. It borrows the author's trust but gives you less control over wording.

Are paid posts in Telegram channels labelled as ads?

That depends on the law of the audience's country and on the channel. Advertising aimed at audiences in Russia may have labelling requirements; see Advertising aimed at users in Russia must be labelled: the word "Реклама" (advertisement), information about the advertiser and an erid identifier assigned by an advertising data operator (ORD); data about the ad is passed through the ORD to the Unified Register of Online Advertising (Roskomnadzor). Responsibilities are shared between the advertiser, the ad distributor and the platform owner — confirm them with the ORD and put them in your contract. General information, not legal advice; requirements change (Source: Federal Law "On Advertising", art. 18.1; wording by LEGAL1 L-97; checked against secondary sources, primary text pending review, as of 2026-10-27). Elsewhere, check the local advertising rules of each target country.
